Grow Your Life

Image

I’ve always longed for a garden.  I have feebly attempted window gardens in all of the apartments I’ve lived in ( for almost a decade now! Eesh!)   It feels good to finally have a yard and my own house! What an immense blessing!

Image

Image

Image

Image

I used my old bathroom tiles as repurposed and recycled materials for my walkway

Image

I planted my own fence

Imagemade another walkway to the hose!

Image

dug and redug (and redug and redug and redug!) my lawn of weeds

Image

until it was ready for planting!

I use 100% organic soil and potting practices

Image

and am compiling a compost pile ( anything from eggs shells, to pomegranate husks, to herbs to leftovers) on the side of my house which I use for my fruits, veggies and flowers to promote growth and wellness!

Horticultural therapy is about using plants and the natural world to promote healing.  Using horticulture as therapy, I build upon the unique connection between myself and my plants.

Image

I get to seek them out as seeds, purchase them, plant them in organic soil, water and cultivate them, watch them grow, and then plant them in my garden bed!!  From there I get to see what promotes and exhibits their growth, and what tastes best for me personally! Keeping a close eye, watching them grow up, and now, getting to the point where they feed me, has been nothing less than immensely rewarding!

What was important to me, having the blessing of a house and a front yard, was to build a meditative space that I could spend time in, do yoga, have breakfast, invite company, and that I could take care of.  I take these peaceful feelings and translate them into practical ideas of how I would like to see a personal garden aimed totally at relaxation.

ImageThe proven benefits of Horticulture Therapy have been immense. I feel fully that it supports emotional and physical healing by promoting happiness, peace and gratification. It is also helpful for relieving stress, and assisting in the general wellbeing for those suffering from physical disabilities. Little did I know that the act of doing this work ITSELF promotes the healing process!

ImageGardening can provide meaningful work, not busy work, for people seeking self-work for long-term care. It provides an opportunity to make decisions, develop cognitive skills, and become responsible for your own wellness.  The sensory stimulation in a garden may slow the effects of dementia, stimulate memory and assist in coping with chronic conditions.

Image

As someone who used to think that a bunch of medication and a dark room in a basement was my solution to good health, I cannot speak enough for this kind of therapy.  Mental health can be nurtured by giving people a sense of hands-on purpose in a community in which their contributions are valued. This is the opposite of the conventional mental health model, where patients are often treated with little more than medication and end up in their own isolated corner of the universe with little to do. With plant based therapy, they are immediately and continuously engaged in a world of organic beings that need their care.

I am SO so excited to watch my plants grow, to feed myself, to expound on this idea and to continue to contribute to a cleaner life!

ImageThe DIY possibilities for creating a garden are endless!  I hope you enjoy and find your own healing through plant life!

They were getting a little too street-friendly. 🙂

Life Lately ( In iPhone Photos )

crows

Wow!  This week has been SO beautiful!  I started some feature film work, did a music video, and shot some gorgeous pieces for a Lookbook!  I’ve been so inspired, the sun is out, and my garden, which I work on daily, is growing well, and my camera is full!  I’ve been working on a ton of music and am in a really child-like place about life.  The fact that I’ve literally been skipping is probably a tremendously good sign!  🙂

In short:

This week: I made a garden bed, started a feature film, played with Lions!!!!, planted all my seedlings, made a walkway for around my garden by re-purposing my old bathroom tiles, got an iMac, started producing & making my own beats, mounted some pressed flowers, created Organic face masks & Herbalist white rose, chamomile & lavender bath teas, went on a few hikes with Raelie, found two new mediation spots, read some Bible passages, listened to two lectures a day, went to an art show at Known Gallery with bestie in LA, released some music with American Plugs. It HAILED in LA (then cleared up immediately!)  But HAIL!  Hello!  I missed you, in a weird way!

Friday Photo Wrap Up

This week was beautiful.

New Moon, new changes, new friends, new sheets.  I have felt light: birds dancing, lots of looking up, moving my body in new ways, burning bushes, sage and rose and rosemary, kundalini.  Yoga grounds, lavender tea, said beautiful hellos and goodbyes, silver rings speaking with every breath that I do.  Listened to some of my old music, brushed up on scales, played Visual Exchange every morning at sunrise, strong visualizations in the tub that left me in happy tears.  Beautiful sunsets, crescent moon, peaceful clouds, and brushing up on my philosophy.  Broke out my film cameras: spent some moment changing film on my bed in the sunlight & drank it in.  I traveled the streets of Hollywood, climbed a few mountains and ran barefoot on the beach.

Love, sweet love.
