The most recent study in Breast Cancer included 40 women with breast cancer who chose to have a mastectomy. Researchers looked at four samples of breast tissue from each woman. The tissue samples came from several locations within the breast, including the armpit region.
Parabens are chemicals. They are naturally found in some plant sources, but those are NOT the Parabens you will find in your Deodorants, which are made synthetically (essentially by combining acid and alcohol.)
I’m not trying to scare you, but that is a very real and very scary statistic. 99% (NINETY NINE!!!) had at least one Paraben. Jeez. . .
There are Parabens in many personal products, which can be taken into the body in different ways and often stay in you. Our tissues are essential storage lockers for chemical such as Parabens.
There are alternatives to this, which is to make an All Natural, DIY recipe to Store-bought Deodorant.
What You’ll Need:
( All of which can be bought here)
- 5 Tbsp* Coconut Oil
- 5 Tbsp Walnut Oil
- 6 Tbsp Baking Soda
- 6 Tbsp Cornstarch or Arrowroot
- 12 Tbsp Kokum Butter
- Essential Oils (optional)
*Adjust your mix accordingly – the important thing is to mix in slightly more butter than you do oil.
Instructions:
- 1. Melt Coconut, Walnut and Kokum Butter over medium heat until melted, stirring occasionally.
- 2. Remove from Heat.
- 3. Add Baking Soda
- 4. Add Cornstarch or Arrowroot
- 5. Mix Well
- 6. Add Essential Oils and Pour into Glass Container for Storage. Let cool.
- As an alternative, place it in an old deodorant stick for easy use!
Use:
This will NOT serve you as an anti-perspirant, but neither will most deodorants you buy. This DIY recipe works well to cover up existing odors, and it will regulate the perspiration in your pits so you don’t have to use as much of anything in the future! Giving your skin and your pores a break is key to regulation! If you find you are perspiring exponentially, there may be other factors involved, like your weight, blood pressure, or an existing ailment, and it’s best to seek clinical treatment if an antiperspirant hasn’t served you well.

Want all natural, clear, even toned skin?
Want a full time glowing, youthful complexion?
Want to be proud of your skin every time you leave the house?
Join the club. 😉
We’ve all had good days and bad days when it comes to our skin. Between hormones, hard water and stress, sometimes it’s hard to know what’s causing all the ruckus. But there are definitely some things that you can indulge in every day, a little bit at a time, to help your skin on it’s way to being the best!
7. Drink Plenty of Water ( & Tea!) / Avoid Caffeine
Want clear skin and a face you’re proud of as well as natural energy? In order for the skin to protect our bodies from UV radiation, microorganisms and toxic agents, it must be kept adequately hydrated. Hydration will allow skin to remain flexible, youthful and elastic. If skin is broken, environmental factors and free radicals can damage our bodies and cause exacerbated water loss, feeding a cyclical pattern of more damage due to further dehydration.
Tip: Tea is an amazing, delicious way to get a bunch of water in throughout the day! Replace your Coffee in the morning with some Naturally Energizing Tea and you’ll see a difference immediately!
6. Smoothie Life
Wanna drink your way to clear skin? Try incorporating a smoothie (or 2 or 3!) into your daily routine. Rich, green, chocolate, fruity, delicious, flexible, smoothies can pack protein, omega-3’s and detoxing agents that help your body restore it’s natural balance!
Tip: Try these 10 smoothies for perfect skin!
5. Sunshine
Despite the health scares about skin cancer, a healthy dose of sun is good not only for our moods, but for our skin! The sunlight kills microbes. That’s why it is important to put out in the sun carpets and blankets that cannot be washed regularly. Exposure to the sun confers the skin a bright, healthy look and increased elasticity. A moderately tanned skin is more resistant to infections and sun burning than an untanned one. Sun rays are also proven to strengthen the immune system.
Tip: 1 hour in the morning or early afternoon (when sun is less strong) of reading outside! Every day!
4. Proper Makeup Removal
Men, this may or may not apply to you! 😉
I know it’s tempting to take a bunch selfies when you’re all dolled up (guilty as charged!) but the MOMENT you step in the door from an engagement, it’s time to take that stuff off your beautiful face!
If you wear makeup, at one point or another, you’ve probably gone to sleep with it on. Whether you forgot you were wearing it or you were just too tired to bother removing it, it happens. The important thing is to make sure it doesn’t become a habit. Leaving makeup on clogs pores, which messes up our sebum production, which is important for balanced skin!
Tip: Jojoba oil is my favorite makeup remover, but Yes To Carrots! also makes an amazing one.
Doing weekly or even daily (depending on your skin’s sensitivity) clay masks to detoxify, purify and cleanse your skin is so, so important to maintain a glowy complexion!
Tip: HERE is my DIY post on different clay masks for different skin types!
2. Omega’s
Getting all of your Omega’s in – whether in the form of fish, vitamins or supplements – is one of the key steps in clear, healthy skin! Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish, help build and restore cells and aids in cell regrowth. Omega 3 fatty acids maintain the structure and fluidity of the cell membrane making sure nutrients enter the cell and waste products are removed. -If you’re worried about toxins in fish, remember the FDA says up to 12 ounces a week is fine. They recommend a variety of fish.
Tip: Adding salmon, tuna or mackerel to your diet is an easy way to get more Omegas! Eating fish in the morning, such as Lox, is also easily beneficial! As well as clearing your skin, adding fish to your diet can also help reduce the inflammation associated with psoriasis and even eczema.
1. Practice Self Confidence (in the Nude)
I have an amazing secret! Are you ready? Lean in real close. It’s a doozy! Ready? Really?! You sure? Okay. . .
Nobody’s perfect!
That’s right. Nobody.
Not even Jennifer Lawrence (. . . she comes pretty close, though.)
The extent to which a person feels the need to alter her face can be as simple as wearing lipstick or as complex as undergoing plastic surgery. Most women can attest that she knows at least one friend who won’t go ANYWHERE “without her face on”. But this speaks to a deeper level of insecurity that – whether from society, media or culture – is very real. The only way to fight this is by practicing the opposite – accepting that we are beautiful just the way we are, and it’s perfectly acceptable to go out with little or (gasp!) no makeup on. That’s right. In the nude.
Believing that you are Naturally Beautiful is the first and most important step to feeling Beautiful.
Tip: If you’re shy about this, start by going somewhere you’re not too likely to run into anyone, but somewhere you’re still inclined to be friendly, like the grocery store, park or on a walk with a good friend. I promise you that – fully “made up” face or not – people will still be wonderful to you and treat you just as nicely (in fact, sometimes way more real) than if you were all dolled up! It feels really good to be accepted for just what you look like! Practice makes perfect, and once you’ve practiced throwing insecurities out the window enough, you won’t be so reliant on always having to be “looking your best” to feel good!
Thank you very much.

So, the missing piece in changing my entire life to all natural products was to step up my Green Makeup Game. When I first started receiving samples of different All Natural Makeup in my monthly Goodebox, I was determined to eventually make the switch completely. I’ve recently started bringing my own all natural products to shoots and handing them over to the MakeUp Artist before they even get a chance to contemplate what shade of toxic chemicals is best for me to wear and inhale all day.
This has had a lovely and unintended consequence: they all end up completely falling in love with the all natural products! I don’t know how many Makeup Artists have told me that they didn’t even know that healthy makeup alternatives existed! I consistently have to bring up websites on my phone and ensure them that yes, this is all natural and YES it stays on my face and YES it works and no a buncha hippies from Colorado don’t make it (okay… sometimes. 😉 ) but that it’s widely available and often times really inexpensive!
I am SO excited to start sharing some of these looks with you, since I’m starting to see some of the final images from recent photo shoots popping up in my inbox! For my first look, I’ll go with what’s most comfortable for me: The “Barely There” Look!
For those of you who hang out with me regularly, you know I don’t wear makeup unless I absolutely have to, and if I do put a little something on, it’s never over the top.
This is a great way to achieve that “barely there” look but still give yourself a nice glow and even skin tone!

I’m first generation mixed.
What this really means is that I have no one in my immediate family to look up to about what to do with this crazy mess of curls I call “My Hair”. Really, most days I’m like What is going on up there?! This mix of curl, kink and straight locks can be a Powerhouse to deal with even on “good hair” days. Every day environmental issues, hard water, temperature change, humidity, as well as other people using curlers, straighteners and product on it for work every day, has resulted in hair that can get dry, damaged and is prone to split ends and breakage. My remedy?
Hot Oil Treatments!
The Benefits of Hot Oil Treatment include:
- Achieving An All Natural Remedy.
- Moisture Balance.
- Treatment for dry scalp.
- Shine, body, and volume.
- Softens and nourishes hair.
- Prevents Frizz & Breakage.
- Works for any ethnicity, even straight hair.
- Especially nourishing for kinky, curly, mixed, colored or extremely damaged hair.
Oils For Thought:
Making Hot Oil:
Solar Infusing herbs is one of my favorite things to do, but it can take 2-6 weeks to infuse completely depending on how much Sun your oil is getting. It’s the most natural and cost/energy effective way to infuse your oil with the healing properties of herbs.
If you want to make an oil treatment immediately, you can
Heat Your Oil:
Take 5 tbsp. of oil and place it in a small ceramic bowl or mug. Place the small bowl or mug in the water on the stove.
Prepare Your Treatment:
- Add an extra 1 tbsp. (15 ml) of olive oil, coconut, macadamia, castor or avocado if your scalp is dry, or you have dandruff.
- Add an extra 1 tbsp. (15 ml) of jojoba oil for fungal scalp problems.
- Allow the oil to sit for a few minutes until it is warm but not hot. You do not want to burn yourself with the hot oil. Remove the oil cup with an oven mitt.
- Wait for oil to cool so that it is touchable. Massage, brush, and comb oil through the scalp using fingertips and a clean brush.
- Wrap your hair in a towel or shower cap and relax for as long as you desire. Leave in overnight for a super powerful treatment!
- Rinse with warm water and comb through with a brush. Style normally!

Phthlatates? DBP? Talc? Parabens? Methlyl? DEHP? Synthetic fragrance? Formaldehyde?!
These are just a few of the cancer causing ingredients found in the most brand name makeup, and the more research I do, the more horrified I’ve become! Unfortunately, the beauty industry is virtually unregulated in the U.S., and many toxic chemicals like phthalates and parabens can be found in the most common of makeup, shampoos, lotions and other personal care products.
As you know, I try to live as clean as I can. However, I’m at the mercy of a job that requires having makeup on for hours at a time. Makeup that is at the whim of whatever makeup artist I am in front of. This month, pretty fed up with my store brand options, Mac-obsessed MUA’s and aggravated skin, I started making my own natural makeup! Well DAMN, wouldn’t you know, it’s actually really fun, easy, and completely inexpensive! I’m excited to share with you my DIY Natural Mineral Foundation Recipe!
What You’ll Need:
- Arrowroot Powder or Cornstarch
- Raw Cacao Powder (Cocoa Powder works well too)
- Finely ground Cinnamon or Nutmeg
To Make:
- Start with the base of Arrowroot or Cornstarch
- Slowly add the Cacao & Spices until you get a shade close to your skin tone.
- Apply liberally with a natural makeup brush and enjoy!
You can also add a homemade lotion + essential oil to make a liquid foundation for all natural coverage!
The best part about this is that it’s customizable in color! Personally, my skin color seems to change daily, depending on how much sun I get, and it allows me to adjust my own color without having to buy new makeup! Voila!
