DIY All Natural Mineral Foundation

allnatch

Phthlatates?  DBP?  Talc?  Parabens?  Methlyl?  DEHP?  Synthetic fragrance?  Formaldehyde?!

These are just a few of the cancer causing ingredients found in the most brand name makeup, and the more research I do, the more horrified I’ve become!  Unfortunately, the beauty industry is virtually unregulated in the U.S., and many toxic chemicals like phthalates and parabens can be found in the most common of makeup, shampoos, lotions and other personal care products.

As you know, I try to live as clean as I can.  However, I’m at the mercy of a job that requires having makeup on for hours at a time.  Makeup that is at the whim of whatever makeup artist I am in front of.  This month, pretty fed up with my store brand options, Mac-obsessed MUA’s and aggravated skin, I started making my own natural makeup!  Well DAMN, wouldn’t you know, it’s actually really fun, easy, and completely inexpensive!  I’m excited to share with you my DIY Natural Mineral Foundation Recipe!

What You’ll Need:

  1. Arrowroot Powder or Cornstarch
  2. Raw Cacao Powder (Cocoa Powder works well too)
  3.  Finely ground Cinnamon or Nutmeg

To Make:

  1. Start with the base of Arrowroot or Cornstarch
  2. Slowly add the Cacao & Spices until you get a shade close to your skin tone.
  3. Apply liberally with a natural makeup brush and enjoy!

You can also add a homemade lotion + essential oil to make a liquid foundation for all natural coverage!

The best part about this is that it’s customizable in color!  Personally, my skin color seems to change daily, depending on how much sun I get, and it allows me to adjust my own color without having to buy new makeup!  Voila!

In Love With: Aquarian Bath Rose Clay Mask

In Love With: Aquarian Bath Rose Clay Mask

Image

I’ll be kicking off the end of July in a big way: a week of a different eco-friendly, natural, organic beauty product that I’m In Love With daily, followed by a BIG Giveaway for one lucky winner!  Stay tuned to learn what natural, organic products you should be using for your skin care, makeup and overall beauty routine!

I’d like to start my Favorites off with a brand that I honestly can’t get enough of… Aquarian Bath!  They’ve really changed the game for me: everything from their essential oils to their vegan soap to their shampoo bar has left me awestruck at how beautiful hand crafted, natural beauty goods can be when done right!

Pink Kaolin Clay (also known as the main ingredient in this amazing face mask/cleanser) is a gentle clay, making it suitable for sensitive skin. It helps stimulate circulation to the skin while gently exfoliating and cleansing it. Pink Kaolin Clay does not draw oils from the skin and can therefore be used on dry skin types.

I use this Rose Clay Mask about once a week, on days where my skin is feeling especially stressed and oily.  It’s definitely gentle enough to use more than that, but I like to switch off with my products and this is extremely detoxifying for me personally!  I put it on my face, let it dry, and run a bath to sit in and read while it goes to work on my pores!

remindyoy

My skin has definitely responded well, and is left really soft and fresh and clean!  It dries (quickly!) to it’s light pink rose color, so you know just when it’s time to take it off!  (If you don’t, it will certainly remind you anytime you try to move your face! ^^)

You can purchase your Aquarian Bath’s Kaolin Mask here for only $4.99 if you’re interested in being on your way to naturally clear skin for (MUCH!) less!

Thank you very much!

5 Super Foods for Kidney Health

5 Super Foods for Kidney Health

Red Bell Peppers

These anti-oxidant veggies are rich in Vitamins  A, C, B6, folic acid and fiber.  They also contain Lycopene, a known cancer-preventitive.  Best raw, however, Lycopene, unlike other carotenes, does not diminish in effectiveness when cooked.  Great in salads, on skewers, as a snack or on sandwiches. 🙂

 garlic-1

Garlic

One of my favorite veggies, and perfect as a pest-control in the garden, I prefer garlic as a tea, but you can add it to just about anything in moderation!  Garlic helps prevent plaque, lowers cholesterol and reduces inflammation.

Buy it fresh, bottled, minced or powdered, and add it to meat, vegetable or salad dishes.

cranberries1

Cranberries

A handful of Cranberries a day can save you a lot of agony!  These tangy, tasty berries are known to protect against bladder infections by preventing bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall. In a similar way, cranberries also protect the stomach from ulcer-causing bacteria and protect the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, promoting GI health. Cranberries have also been shown to protect against cancer and heart disease.

Blueberries

Even if you have advanced kidney disease, blueberries are one of the few fruits that you can eat without worry.   While blueberries may be relatively low in nutrients, they are very high in anti-oxidants, with 6,520 mcg of anti-oxidant compounds in a 100-g serving. By way of comparison, cooked broccoli has only 1,552 mcg in a 100-g serving. Anti-oxidant-rich foods don’t harm your kidneys. Rather, they help prevent cancer and other chronic diseases.

olive oil

Olive Oil

One of my favorite super foods over all, Olives & Olive Oil are a great source of oleic acid, an anti-inflammatory fatty acid, and the monounsaturated fat in olive oil protects against oxidation. Olive oil is rich in ployphenols and antioxidant compounds that prevent inflammation and oxidation.

Studies show that populations that use large amounts of olive oil instead of other oils have lower rates of heart disease and cancer.

Buy virgin or extra virgin olive oil because they are higher in antioxidants. Use olive oil as a base in cooking, for dipping bread or for marinating veggies.

The Best Bay Tacos (Ever)

 Image

So, I cook a lot.  Just about everything that goes into my tummy has some element taken from my garden or has been formed in some way with my own hands.  And while perhaps 3/4ths of my diet is raw (including eggs), I have approached life with a semi-flexitarian nutrition plan because, let’s face it – sometimes you just want some meat. 🙂

Image

One of the things I really like to tackle is my Best Bay Tacos Recipe: mostly because it’s been a huge hit with everyone who’s tried it (and who doesn’t like to be complimented on their cooking? 🙂 )  They’re protein-rich, super filling and actually pretty good for you!   🙂 Me and J finally got to taking some photos of my taco adventure the other day ( I make these maybe once a week!), and I’m more than happy to share my Best Bay Tacos Recipe with you!

What You’ll Need

Necessities: Taco Shells

Veggies: Organic or Homegrown Tomato, Organic Onion, Organic Avocado, Organic or Homegrown Lettuce, Organic Garlic, Organic Lemon

Dairy: 4 Cheese Blend or Mexican Cheese or Soy Cheese, Sour Cream

Meat: Organic Tilapia (or fish of your choice) & 1 lb small Organic Shrimp, peeled and deveined

Oil: Coconut Oil, Olive or Flaxseed Oil

Herbs: Sea Salt, Black Pepper, Thyme, Rosemary

 ImageImage

1.  I like to dice up my veggies first.  There have been many ways discussed on how to properly dissect an avocado, but a ripe avocado should easily come out on it’s own after being sliced in the middle.  🙂

ImageImage

2. Preheat Oven to 350 Degrees.  Season Fish with Coconut Oil and leave in for 30 ins.

 ImageImage

3. Combine Olive Oil, Thyme, Rosemary, Shrimp in Saucepan.  Season with Fresh Lemon until blackened.

ImageImage

 4. Remove Cooked Fish from oven, top with Flaxseed oil ( I prefer this way because adding the Flaxseed before runs you the risk of losing the Flaxseed nutrients during the cooking process), Dice

 Image

5. Place in Taco Shells in the following order: Organic Fish, Onions, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Shrimp, then Avocado

 Image

6. Top with Sour Cream and Soy Cheese.  Enjoy delightfully! 🙂

New Body

Yesterday was my Bandiversary!

Image

Hindu Doggie has officially been together for a year!  We’ve traveled across the country, we’ve created more than 1 song a month, we’ve performed at The House of Blues as Residents, we won VIP KROQ passes to Coachella together, we went parasailing and now, we bring you the album version of my absolute favorite song I’ve ever written: New Body:

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/67057708″ iframe=”true” /]

Yesterday was marvelous.  I was lucky enough to be invited to the Pamper Me Fabulous Event in Los Angeles at the Terranea Resort yesterday!   Pamper Me Fabulous celebrates YOU in a full day of inspirational programming for mind, body, spirit. This ultimate Women’s Day Out featured workouts, workshops, shopping, beauty, spa, health, and wellness bests, free flowing bubbly, a gift bag and uplifting energy!  It was TONS of fun, I met absolutely remarkable people, and I couldn’t help but blog about it!  The best part?  An afternoon pass was only $12 (you must be 21+)!

First of all, the resort is absolutely GORGEOUS!   I got to reach out to a ton of wonderful independent brand owners, meet some great speakers, get some free samples to try and connect with other like-minded women!  I also ran into my very good Makeup Artist (MUA) friend Liza who I haven’t seen since my Clairol shoot!  It was great to see a familiar face and reach out to all these brands and organizations!  Everyone was super nice and enthusiastic about what I’ve been doing and I can’t wait to share some of the more organic beauty brands I’ve discovered!  The idea that taking care of myself is fun, informative, I can be extremely knowledgable about it and share it with others makes me feel absolutely amazing.

I think it’s super important to get out and be social – especially for people like me, whose tendency is really to workworkwork from home until I am dragged away from it.  It gave me an entirely new confidence about the work that I’m doing to go out and engage people in it!  I would really love to start speaking publicly about my journey to wellness, since it is still a daily struggle and I know a lot of people suffer silently.  There are definitely LOTS of events – and hopefully some speaking engagements – in my future!

I’ve come a long way.  The idea of pampering or treating myself to anything a few months ago – never mind dedicating a whole day to it – seemed totally absurd and like a waste of my time.  And while I would happily drop a ton of money on rent, or gas, or food, you couldn’t get me to drop $15 for a pedicure or $10 on a good shampoo.   And honestly, those things are SO important!  I think it’s really important to have a nice spa day – even at home.  I encourage you all to treat yourself with raw items from your own kitchen cabinet and in the comfort of your own home! 🙂

At Home Tricks to Treat Yourself

This Egg-White Face Mask is one of my all time favorite ways to feel like a princess at home for a few hours.  Including the prep, it takes almost no time at all but you will feel amazing!

These polishes are 100% natural and you and your girlfriends can make a day out of trying out their Winter colors!

This Banana Avocado Hair Mask is nourishing, conditioning, and fabulous!  Also, a great way to get rid of super ripe bananas and avocado!

Soaking your body is absolutely essential to getting rid of toxins, as well as wonderful for your mind.  This is where I normally begin my morning meditation.  Take a nice, long bath at least once a week and try to get a chapter or two in of that book you’ve been neglecting!

Groupon is my favorite app/website for deals!  If you don’t have that $15 to drop on a pedicure, I guarantee you that a few days scouring Groupon will find you at least a half off deal, if you can’t find one for free!  I got a mani/pedi and spray tan (which I fore-went) with my last GroupOn find for free just around the corner in LA!  You can find everything from $20 teeth whitening, to a perfect vacation, to deals at your favorite Vegan place!  Whatever makes you feel good – take advantage of it! 🙂

What are some ways you like to relax?  Have you been to any Pamper Me Fabulous events?  How do you like the new track?  🙂  As always, I love to hear from you!
