Supplements You Should Be Taking For Your Skin

Supplements You Should Be Taking For Your Skin

I had hard, painful, cystic acne all along my jawline, as well as terrible bouts of psoriasis on my legs and arms during humid months.  As a teenager & young adult, I couldn’t really complain. I’d get a zit here and there, but my skin was never bad.

This was bad.

Once I came off all my medication (including birth control), hormones hit me hard.  I got bad, bad acne around my mouth, chin, cheeks, and areas that are absolutely impossible to hide. ‘Embarrassed’ was not the word. I felt like a different person.

Fed up with having tried absolutely everything, including medication, topical creams, dermatologists, and the like to no avail, I decided I was going to dedicate my entire supplement regime (as well as many mantra-driven meditation practices, as mentioned in depth here) to caring for my skin.

However, it didn’t take too long in my research before I found a few supplements that kicked acne and skin issues to the curb. And years later, I can honestly say (and show!) that these supplements have really, seriously saved my skin!

DIM Plus

DIM is short for Dimethylglycine, which is an amino acid (the building blocks of proteins.)  It is plant based phytonutrient (plant nutrient), and normally found in small amounts in our bodies, for very small amounts of time.

DIM is mostly found in cruciferous vegetables.  These include cabbage, broccoli, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, mustard, rutabaga, and turnip.  These plants have been cultivated for thousands of years and were initially used for their medicinal benefits.  The connection between DIM and hormones like estrogen has to do with similar characteristics between them at the molecular level.  DIM is not an estrogen or a hormone, but like estrogen it shares the common characteristic of being poorly soluble in water.

DIM is used for everything from ADHD to acne, but it’s benefits reach far and wide.  For me, it put me on a consistent monthly cycle, has reduced aging lines, makes my skin glow, stabilized my moods, heavily reduced my breakouts, boosted my immune system, and lowered my blood pressure.  I can only imagine what it does for others!

It took about 8 weeks for me to see my skin clear up fully, but I did have initial, amazing results overnight, including less bumpy skin, less oil and a smoother texture! Because I am both testosterone and estrogen dominant, I take 4 capsules a day of this kind with meals and my other skin supplements, and I still haven’t suffered from any hormonal breakouts.  If I feel one coming on, I will up the dosage and the DIM usually helps my body to take care of it.  This has been an absolute miracle for me, and I cannot go a day without it or I WILL see “under the skin” bumps start to creep back in.

Omegas-blog es

Omega-3-6-9 fatty acids

If it’s golden in colour, you don’t really have to convince me to put it on my skin or in my body.  Omegas, commonly known as the “good fats”, have recently been credited with increasing heart health as well as helping your skin look healthier. The foods highest in omega’s fatty acids include seafood (especially tuna and salmon) as well as walnuts, canola oil, and flax seed.  Not only do they protect your skin from free radical damage, they act as an anti-oxidant that helps your body process the release of enzyme’s that happen when we are exposed to the sun.  Because of their anti-inflammatory properties, omega’s can also help relieve skin conditions like rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema.

Any time my joints hurt, I also pop some of these.  Break one open and add it to dry areas on your face for an extra boost!  I take a supplement that has Omegas 3, 6, and 9 (fish oil, borage, and flax) as well as the Borage pill (mentioned below) itself.

picnic

Borage

Borage seed oil is used for everything from acne, to inflammation, arthritis, and has been used as a natural sedative, lifting the spirits and softening the nervous edge some people experience. Borage works well to ease the depression and mood swings often associated with menopause and menstrual cycles as well and is a nice alternative to traditional prescription medications.

It’s an intense blood purifier, and contains high levels of a fatty acid called GLA, which seems to have  amazing anti-inflammatory effects.  Taking these borage pills internally or applying it directly to my skin has had amazing effects!

Evening Primrose Oil

Speaking of GLA, this little miracle supplement has truly changed the game for me.  It contains the pain relieving compound phenylalanine and is increasingly being used to treat chronic headaches, aging problems, alcoholism, acne, heart disease, hyperactivity in children, symptoms of menopause, multiple sclerosis, weight control, obesity, PMS and schizophrenia.

Evening Primrose Oil contains a high concentration the fa tty acid GLA.  It is this fatty acid that is largely responsible for the remarkable healing properties of the plant. In fact, Evening Primrose contains one of the highest concentrations known of this important substance and only a few other plants contain it at all. This makes Evening Primrose an important medicinal herb, and as studies continue, the list of benefits will likely become much longer.

The gamma-linoleic acid, linoleic acid and other nutrients in this oil are essential for cell structure and improve the elasticity of the skin. These fatty acids also help to regulate hormones and improve nerve function aiding problems ranging from PMS to migraine headaches. The hormone balancing effect also contributes to healthy breast tissue.

Fish Collagen

Collagen: It’s the building block for all our body’s major systems and the second most common substance in the body, coming up right behind water, only in terms of volume. Although abundant in our youth, the body’s natural Collagen production typically slows at a rate of 1.5% per year after the age of 25. As this collagen production slows, the collagen fibers in the body become brittle and begin to break down resulting in a weakening of the skin matrix (dermis). The skin matrix is responsible for the structural integrity and resilience of the skin and its natural degradation results in many of the visible signs of aging such as fine lines, loss of elasticity and eventually, deep wrinkles.

Typically derived from salmon and red snapper, fish collagen is up to 1.5 times more absorbent than other collagen’s because of its low molecular weight. Fish collagen is absorbed through the intestinal barrier into the bloodstream and then carried throughout the body, so it is the best source of collagen for your skin.

5 Natural Ways To Treat Dry Skin

5 Natural Ways To Treat Dry Skin

treatingdryskin-825x496

(Originally published on Mind Body Green)

For more than two decades, I used conventional treatments to address my dry skin, but everything from my environment to the products I sampled only aggravated my condition. In fact, many of the products I used to treat my dry skin made it much worse.

Petroleum jelly, brand-name pharmacy lotions, and dermatologist-prescribed treatments were what I relied on during my ongoing battle against painful, dry, and flaky patches that popped up daily on my cheeks, chin, and around my mouth. The skin beneath my nose was constantly dry, cracked, and peeling, and no matter what I used, it always seemed to make the situation much messier.

Even more frustrating? The products stung my skin — they burned and turned the delicate areas bright red. Psoriasis flared, staring from strangers ensued, and my social life was basically nonexistent due to my embarrassment.

It took a long time, but I decided to stop using the pharmaceuticals, chemical-laden prescriptions, and conventional products four years ago. Finally, I started to address the real source of my problem: non-natural products. When I said goodbye to the Proactive and Accutane, I discovered I had naturally glowing, supple skin.

Of course, my cure isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach; there are many possible causes for dry skin, so first and foremost, it’s important to educate yourself and figure out what’s causing your issues. The best way to treat dry skin is from the inside out, but conversely, it’s incredibly effective to treat dry skin from the outside in.

Anything from humidity to steamy showers to conventional soap can aggravate skin, and something as simple as drinking more water can treat it. Maybe it sounds simplified, but anytime I neglect my habits, dry skin, acne, and psoriasis flare up. So how do we treat dry, itchy skin naturally and for good? Here are some ways that have truly changed my skin for the best … forever!

1. Oil

Though you may be tempted to lather your body with lotion when dealing with dry skin, your best — and more natural — option is oil. Most conventional moisturizers contain humectants to lock in moisture, but they can also work in reverse and pull much-needed hydration out of your skin. Oil, on the other hand, will sink into your skin and stay there.

Organic almond, jojoba, olive, rosehip, neem, macadamia, marula, and coconut oils are my favorites and are incredible for the entire body as well as your face. They’re skin-firming oils that help to fight wrinkles and acne, all while creating a supple, beautiful complexion.

2. Fish oil and marine collagen

Fish oil and marine collagen are two very effective products to moisturize skin from the inside out. On their own, they work well, but when you combine them, they can lead to a near-perfect complexion.

High in omegas, fish oil will help your cells get and maintain their health, lead to supple cell membranes (which equals plump, hydrated skin), and keep moisture locked in to your skin. I find that it helps with everything from lightening dark circles to dry skin to acne. And since marine collagen is a fibrous protein extracted from the skin of a fish, when you add marine collagen to the mix it’ll help slow the effects of aging and reverse environmental damage (such as dry skin!).

3. Hydrating masks

Using these is a great, easy way to combat dry skin, especially if you’re going the DIY route and can control the ingredients. If you want to purchase a mask, look for ingredients like honey, sea kelp, oil, or berries, as they’re all natural ways to treat the condition. To make your own, mix equal partsmanuka honey, organic olive oil, raspberries, lemon, and turmeric. Whip them together in a bowl and then apply to face and dry areas for a potent anti-inflammatory, hydrating treatment.

4. Water

If you do nothing else for your skin, at least make sure you’re drinking plenty of water. Almost 60 percent of our bodies are made of water, so it’s crucial to the health of not only our skin, but to every single cell we’re made up of. First and foremost, water helps to flush toxins from your body, so any nasties hiding inside that might be contributing to your dry skin are likely to get washed out with enough hydration. Water is also your skin’s best friend, so drink up!

In terms of the water you’re washing yourself with, it might be time to invest in a filtered shower head and faucet. Many cities have “hard” water, meaning it’s high in mineral content. These minerals have the ability to dry out your skin or even leave a film on your body that will suck moisture over time.

5. Moisturizing soap

Using the correct soap is essential to winning your dry skin battle. Many soaps can be dehydrating because they’re conventionally designed to be industrial and contain sodium, which is disruptive to skin. Repeated use of this kind of soap will dry the skin out since sodium interferes with the body’s natural protective layer that keeps moisture in. Look for moisturizing soap in which the first or second ingredient is a natural oil or butter, and that contains essential oils. If you can find some without water or sodium, even better!

If you’re doing all these things and still experiencing dry skin, you might want to try eliminating these things from your diet to see a difference:

Coffee

I know life without your precious cup of joe seems daunting, but doesn’t a life with dull skin sound worse? If you’re doing all of the above and still experiencing dry, dull, or aging skin, look no further. Coffee is an appetite depressant as well as a diuretic, meaning it depletes the amount of water your body gets, needs, and holds on to.

Caffeine

Speaking of caffeine-free, this dehydrating little bugger is sneaking into your life in all kinds of ways … not just through your morning cup! Try replacing soda and energy drinks with ginseng, ginger, or lemon water for a natural boost of energy and a glowing complexion!

Alcohol

You wouldn’t put alcohol on your face when you’re battling dry skin, so why put it in your body? Alcohol is one of the biggest roadblocks we face when it comes to our skin. If you must drink, try drinking an alcohol that’s organic or comes from a plant (like organic wine or gluten-free beer) instead of hard alcohol. This will minimize the damage, but the only way to completely avoid the risk is to stop drinking completely. I know it’s a bit of a bummer, but at least eliminating some days (or some hours) of drinking in a week can truly show a drastic improvement! Your skin will thank you.

5 Natural Ways To Get Healthy Skin

unout

We all go through it. Periods of dull, dry, complicated skin. Sometimes it’s after a night of partying, other times a small sign of self-neglect, and other times we’re just stressed, busy or broke. Radiance is something we all seek. Your complexion is radiant when it’s smooth and bright enough to reflect light. We all want to be able to achieve (and keep) a healthy color, as well as the beautiful, youthful skin we know we deserve. How can we combat dullness and achieve our best color and complexion all year round? The answers are simple, and provided by nature!

Supplements

Supplements are my favorite, fool-proof way to achieve healthy, glowing skin. If you’re frustrated with dull, dry or even acneic skin, supplements could be your answer!

Some of my favorite supplements for a lovely complexion are:

Biotin – An essential B vitamin, biotin is great for digestion, skin, hair and nails.

Iron – to combat anemia. Iron is used for tackling dryness and pale skin. It adds a natural glow.

Omega’s – Omega’s are perfect for wrinkle prevention. Omegas organically create supple, smooth skin.

A zinc orotate powder may be a good supplement to buy because it also helps promote healthy skin as well as support immune function and promote a healthier mood. It’s more of an all-round supplement so well worth looking into.

Try to get a lot of greens in your diet too. Salads and smoothies are a great way to do this!

Plenty of Water

Drinking the recommended 8-10 glasses of water a day can be hard, so try adding some berries, fruit, lemon or even some essential oils into your water!

final-ws-bellybliss-300x375I adore Belly Bliss by Well Scent. Well Scent makes 100% Organic and Wild-Harvested Blend for Digestion, Liver + Gut Support. I take this in the morning every day with hot water + cayenne pepper and lemon. It’s very refreshing, calming and soothes my tummy.

I instantly notice more hydrated, supple, brighter skin and less cellulite creeping in. Plus, my digestion and my mood are both noticably better! Well Scent also makes an amazing essential oil for Cystic Acne!

Sunshine

Atapa Snana is the yogic phrase for the healing benefits of sun bathing.

It’s June. So you no longer have any excuse. Get outside! Soak up the sunshine! Add some Vitamin D into your supplement routine on days where the sun is being super stubborn (like it has been in San Diego recently! Jeez!) Try to get 10-15 minutes of sunshine every day. This helps our skin naturally, as an anti-cancer, mood stabilizer, decreasing asthma, and supporting the immune system. And it gives us a killer glow!

Get Your Glow On

Glow_Creme_1__83196.1427094245.1280.1280-510x311

Using a luminizer with my makeup is my favorite way to get a glow naturally! I proudly collaborate with Delizioso Skincare to provide an organic, natural glow crème luminzer. With bases of organic olive oil, prickly pear seed oil, argan oil, and natural mica, it will brighten your complexion as well as add a youthful glow. If you’re not-so-vegan, RMS Beauty also makes an amazing luminizer. There’s also the beautiful Dolce highlighter by Alima Pure.

No matter how you go about it, adding a natural shimmer to the face around the tops of the cheekbones and around the eyes can instantly create a brighter, younger, more supple look to the skin.

Tips: Use a cream luminizer for a young, fresh look. Use a powder highlighter for a matte shimmer. Both pair beautifully with any choice of makeup!

Avoid Caffeine

brewed

DIY All Natural Relaxation Tea

If you’ve done all the above and are still experiencing a dull or unusually pale complexion, you may want to consider coming off of America’s most accepted drug: caffeine. Caffeine is super hard for our body to process. It can congest your liver, which causes liver spots. Caffeine blocks your liver from filtering out very important toxins. It’s also incredibly dehydrating for your entire body. In fact, coffee is a natural diuretic. Caffeine also increases heart rate, often mimicking symptoms of anxiety!

You can replace this with tea, such as Buddha Teas.

Laurel Whole Plant Organics – formerly Sequoia Beauty – was one of the first brands I ever blogged about here on The Organic Life. Back when Laurel Whole Plant Organics was Sequoia Beauty and The Organic Life was My Organic Life (ch-ch-ch-changes!) I was falling head over heels with Laurel’s Shaffer’s awesome, potent, gorgeous creations time and time again. Everything I tried, I loved. Everyone I saw, I raved to!

Laurel is a testament to accomplishing your dreams against all odds. She’s a beam of light and a beautiful business woman who really makes it work. I was super happy with Laurel’s standards and her commitment to her craft and impressed with this spirited chick who grew many of her brands awesome ingredients in her own garden. I continue to be blown away by what Laurel has accomplished in the past few years. Attending the opening of Laurel Skin’s Studio this weekend was like taking a big gulp of friendship Pride.

When I visited Laurel’s studio a few weeks ago, she was still preparing to open. We chatted a bit about what brands she was going to sell – many of my favorites, including La Bella Figura, Josh Rosebrook, Lurk and more!   We talked about how the place was going to look, but I was absolutely blown away to actually see it finished in all it’s gorgeous glory!
